From the "Links" section on the opening page of this site:

All about the Chinooks and other Indians of the Columbia. Mostly based upon the Journals of Lewis and Clark. Please note that this link "sort of" hints at the fact that there was no real "tribe" of Chinook. The many bands or groups of Indians living all along the Columbia, up to The Dalles, Oregon, were all considered Chinook, due to their common language. But there was no real Centralized Government, with elected Leaders. Each Village had its' own Great Chief, and many times it was a woman. They intermarried up and down stream along the Columbia. The Chinook married Clatsops and the Clatsops married Chinooks. North shore and South shore.
There exists a bronze statue of Chief Comcomly's daughter, "Illit-chit-tee", along the Marine Walkway, down by the eateries, Who-Song and Larry's and The Chart House, and she married Chief Casino, whose band lived up-river from Astoria. She was a Great Tyee (Chief) in her own right and was said to "paddle her own canoe" and had a Shaman's magical power. Where she is buried I do not know, but she was famous enough to have a statue made in her likeness, and put on public display. The artist, by the way, did an excellent job on reproducing her facial features.
