An excellent source of information is "The Columbian" newspaper from Vancouver, Wa.
This link below, talks of the Chinook Canoe. Of note is the Chinook listing of the actual names of 13 sea-captains that had visited the Chinook at the mouth of the Columbia River BEFORE Lewis and Clark got there. We do not know if these were the captains who visited in the 5 years previous, or in the 10 years previous. What we do know is that this "list" was not a verbal list--as spoken to Lewis & Clark--but a written list, in pen and ink, in plain English, and was "given" to Lewis & Clark. It was common practice, in those times, for a seasoned sea-captain to command different ships at different times, so that there are no ship names listed here. This is understandable. However, please notice that the list DOES NOT contain the names of Captian Vancouver or Captain Gray, who were there during these times, and were big in the history of the Lower Columbia. Odd?

Who these captians were, and the names of the ships they commanded, and when they were "over the bar" or anchored off-shore, the countries they represented, etc. remains a mystery.
