Yes, the Chinook are "oh-so-close" to being fully recognized. Everyone was/is hoping that the Lewis & Clark bi-centennial would be all the nudge it would take to get the Governments' blessing (again). By now, the Chinook were "supposed" to know something, one way or another, but here we have not seen or heard anything. My wife's cousin is a Tribal council chair-person so we would know, you'd think. We did get the last issue of "Tillicums" (Chinook for "families") newsletter, and it contained hopeful caution of regognition. It also contained the 'Net addy of the Tribal Web-site.

On the "official" Web-site, if you happen to have all day (it's slow)---you can download a PDF file of a copy of "Tillicums"---the plan being to put them ALL on there as a reference source.

Also, believe it not, The Boston Globe Archives contain a bunch of articles on the Chinook. The whole BIA/Gover mess is explained there in great detail. The only reason that I can fathom for the Globes' interest in the welfare of the Chinook is the old tie-in with the Fur Trade. The Chinook actually called them, "Bostonians", after the city of Boston, their homeport. So, on a dull evening (?) at Vassar, now you have another location to surf to, on the 'Net. :-)
