Yes, this is a fun site. Cruise thru all of my previous posts and see what you think. There are lots and lots of young people on here, having been "snooker-ed" into homework concerning the Chinook Tribe. I have been trying to steer some of them in the right direction. There IS tribal information out on the 'Net--but you have to have a bull-dog's determination to find most of it. It remains to be seen if the Chinook will have anything to do with the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial after the denial of Federal Recognition. This post is a very real part of "the continuing historical identity" as a tribe--one of the criteria set down by the Government to qualify for recognition. The family reunion that we had in our backyard, where 90% of the Wa-ki-a-cum Band of the Chinook Tribe were present, qualifies as "a legal gathering" under the Federal Rules of Recognition. I still haven't read the "official" story of the Federal Denial, but I did pick up on a few points. As I understand it, there were 3 "areas of concern" where the BIA had questions. At this time, I do not know what they were, but I do know that there are (I believe) 9 different Federal criteria to satisfy, before any Tribe can be recognized. I also picked up on the fact that the BIA "lost" 7 volumes (books/files) of Chinookian Records--and later chastised the Tribe for not supplying them--and then later-- the BIA "found" the missing documents. Politics? Dunno. How heavy did the "missing" documents weigh in on the Denial of Recognition???? According to comments that I read, it accounted for alot. Tribal Chairman Gary Johnson and his wife were in Washington, D.C. (for a dedication regarding the up-coming Lewis & Clark Bicentennial) just before July 4th.--rubbing elbows with President George Bush, hoping for the best....THE PRESIDENT HAD TO KNOW....did he say anything?
