In reading an original copy of Vancouver's book, he tells of the pelt. He mentions the dogs on Lopez or San Juan Island, near Anachortes and Whidbey where he saw some gray and brown ones. I don't recall anything of his down on the Columbia. There was also a problem keeping dogs in several places on the Western coast of Vancouver Island, The Western coasts of Washington, Oregon, up the Columbia a way, and clear down to Northern California, because of the presence in several tributaries of the three vector parasite which infects salmon, a certain snail, and a mammal. When dogs eat raw salmon from these waters, it gets salmon poisoning, and usually dies. However, I've checked that out recently, and evidently all rivers and creeks are not infected in those areas, though many are. Fisherman in those areas can tell you tales of losing favorite dogs that walked the edges and beaches.
