Another great post, Tenas, thank you.

The Chinook did not always move their Plankhouses when they moved to a Winter Camp. We have all been conditioned to believe that to be true. It would be to the advantage of the Chinook to leave Comcomly's Village pretty much intact and leave a few scouts there over the winter to watch for traders coming in over the Bar. I believe that if there was a Winter Camp located in a box canyon off of the Naselle River, it would have had permanent dwellings built there. It makes sense if only because the Upper Naselle river-bottom is littered with huge rocks. Tough going for a canoe, even if it was flat-bottomed. Yes, there are a thousand sites worthy of study, but they are disappearing fast. They are building roads and homes on Mt. Solo, which was a burial site. They are selling RV Lots near Altoona. The list goes on.

Federal and State money is drying up for study. This is one of the reasons why Federal Recognition of the Chinook Tribe is so important.

But, we still don't know (for sure) where Comcomly wintered his people.

Steady Eddie

I do mean an archeological dig, or study. The number of people there would have left something behind, as they lived there for months at a time.
