Well, I can’t help you with the rest of it, but the fire part I know. They rubbed two sticks together. Only one of the sticks was more like a short plank, 14 - 18 inches long by 6 - 8 inches wide. along the sides of this little plank were cupped depression and notches. They would place tender in the cupped areas and then rub along the notches until they raised a spark. Takes a lot of practice and you have to keep the wood dry [I suspect they tied the kit up in a water tight bladder].
